BMW is launching the new plug-in hybrid xDrive45e
version of the X5 in Europe, which makes use of the company’s fourth generation
eDrive technology. Under the familiar shape of the X5 lies a 282 HP, 3.0-liter
inline-six paired to a 110 HP electric motor. The combined output is rated at 394 PS and 600 Nm of torque, which is eclipses its
four-pot predecessor.
Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed
automatic transmission while the charging port nests on the left front fender.
Apart from that, though, and some badges, there’s nothing that distinguishes
the X5 xDrive45e from its ICE-powered siblings.
BMW claims a 0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds
and a top speed of 235 km/h. Use the dedicated EV mode and the German
SUV will cover between 67 to 87 km per the WLTP cycle, with
its top speed limited to 135 km/h.
The electrified powertrain is backed by a 24 kWh
lithium-ion battery pack and BMW’s latest power electronics for more
intelligent energy management and improved efficiency. The luggage compartment
is smaller compared to ICE-powered X5 models by 150 liters, but still offers a
volume of 500 liters with all seats in the upright position.
The plug-in hybrid X5 comes with air suspension and
electronically controlled dampers as standard, with BMW offering all-wheel
steering as an option. It also has acoustic pedestrian protection, which means
it plays a sound to alert nearby pedestrians of its presence when running
silently on electric power alone.
