The FX4 moniker applied to the Ford Ranger has
different market-specific meanings. In the U.S., it’s an optional Off-Road
package that makes the pickup truck more capable on challenging terrains,
whereas in Australia, it’s actually a special edition of the vehicle.
Announced for the 2020MY, the FX4 is based on the
Ranger XLT dual-cab 4×4 and sits between the XLT 4×4 and Wildtrak 4×4. The
first units will arrive at dealers in December, but you may want to hurry up
and place a deposit if you dig the spec, as it “will initially be limited to
around 1,000 units”, according to the automaker.
The things that make the Ranger FX4 special are the
Ebony Black grille, side mirror casings, door and tailgate handles and fender
features, blacked-out bi-LED headlights, 3D effect FX4 decals, black-finished
extended sports bar and 18-inch alloy wheels with a special pattern.
Specific front sports seats are found in the cabin,
along with leather accents, contrast stitching and embossed FX4 logos. The
Tinted Graphite accents on the doors and instrument panel, premium soft-touch
instrument panel top, distinctive FX4 floor mats and other features round up
the list of changes inside. Additionally, the Ranger FX4 also gets the SYNC3
infotainment system as standard, featuring Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and
voice-activated satellite navigation, digital instrumentation and reversing
camera, alongside a host of safety systems.
Customers will be able to choose between two
engines: the 213 PS 2.0-liter and 200 PS 3.2-liter diesels, with the former getting a 10-speed auto ‘box and the latter
a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. The towing capacity in both versions
is 3,500 kg.
