The 2019 Mitsubishi Triton has been spotted wearing
a rather unique looking sports bar on its bed, something that wasn’t there when
it was launched earlier this year. Upon enquiry, the “Flying Sports Bar”, as
it’s called, has been added to the range topping Triton VGT Adventure X variant
since mid year.
Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) probably called the
sports bar that because it appears “floating”, as opposed to being fully stuck
on the edges of the truck’s bed. Instead, the sports bar is joined to the bed
at two small sections per side. Looks distinctive, that’s for sure. MMM says that the Flying Sports
Bar is exclusive to the Adventure X trim level, and the sticker price for the
top spec 2019 Triton remains unchanged at RM 135,200.
Launched in January, the Dynamic Shield-faced Triton
is more than just a facelift. MMC’s one-tonne truck receives a new six-speed
automatic gearbox (up from five), and the Super Select 4WD II system with
Off-Road Mode and hill descent control. New comfort features include an air
circulator with two rear vents on the roof (comes with its own control panel
with four fan speeds), rear USB charging ports and soft touch padding in the
cockpit.
The Triton is powered by a 2.4 litre MIVEC
turbodiesel with 181 PS and 430 Nm of torque at 2,500 rpm. This engine – which
has an aluminium alloy block and variable geometry turbo – is now standard
across the Malaysian Triton range (not including the workhorse Triton Quest),
which was previously split between the 2.4L MIVEC and the older 2.5L
turbodiesel. Also, all five variants are 4×4 now.
Safety has seen an upgrade as well. Driver assist
features such as Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM), Blind Spot Warning with
Lane Change Assist (BSW with LCA), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Ultrasonic
Misacceleration Mitigation System (UMS), Auto High Beam (AHB) and seven airbags
are now available on the top-spec Triton Adventure X.
