Chevrolet has confirmed that the 2020 Corvette
Stingray Convertible will debut before the end of the year but before this
happens, a piece of crucial information about the mid-engined droptop has
emerged online.
A recent post of ours revealed that the new C8
Corvette Stingray coupe has a quarter-mile time of 11.3 seconds. This
information came from an official GM booklet and it is this same booklet,
viewed by the guys over at the Corvette Forum, that also reveals the new
Corvette Convertible tips the scales at 3,637 lbs. That is just 102 lbs or 46
kg heavier than the Coupe with its curb weight of 3,535 lbs.
Curiously, the conversion to kilograms in the
booklet is a little inaccurate, listing the Convertible’s 3,637 lbs curb weight
down as 1,653 kg when it is in fact 1,649 kg. Similarly, the 3,535 lbs curb
weight of the coupe translates to 1,603 kg not the 1,607 kg listed.
Nonetheless, it is pretty impressive that Chevrolet
has been able to chop off the car’s roof without adding too much weight,
leading us to believe that the underpinnings of the new ‘Vette are so strong
that very little additional strengthening was needed to make the convertible.
This makes sense as the coupe’s roof panel can be removed.
Official teasers of the new Corvette Stingray
Convertible published by Chevrolet have confirmed that the sports car will
receive a removable hardtop and feature seductive buttresses over the engine
bay not present on the coupe. While no powertrain specifications about the Convertible have been
released, it will inevitably feature the same naturally-aspirated 6.2-liter V8
as the coupe with the same 490 hp in standard spec and 495 hp with the
available sports exhaust.
