Consumers can’t
seem to get enough crossovers and it appears Opel and Vauxhall are happy to
oblige as spy photographers have caught an all-new model which will slot above
the Grandland X. Sporting a distinctive face, the mystery model has a prominent
grille and unique lighting units. The crossover also has a large air intake and
vertical openings near the outside edges.
Moving further
back, we can see door-mounted mirrors and a pronounced shoulder line that runs
from the hood to the tailgate. Other notable features include a gently sloping
roof and a relatively rakish windscreen.
While Opel and
Vauxhall are no longer owned by General Motors, the rear end closely mimics the
one used on the Buick Enclave. It features wraparound
taillights that appear to be connected by a thin strip of chrome trim. The
model also has a tailgate-mounted spoiler, a dual exhaust system and a rear window
that angles up towards the outside edges.
We’re not entirely
sure what the model will be called, but it’s expected to be based on the
long-wheelbase version of the EMP2 platform that underpins the Peugeot 5008.
Engine options could be shared between the models so petrol choices could
include a 1.2-liter with 128 hp and a 1.6-liter developing 163
hp. On the diesel side, there could be 1.6- and 2.0-liter
units developing between 99 hp and 178 hp.
Unfortunately, the
Opel / Vauxhall crossover could be front-wheel drive only. That’s a bit
disappointing, but not surprising as the 5008 isn’t offered with all-wheel
drive either. We should learn more about the crossover soon as speculation suggests
it could be introduced as early as next year.
