A special edition version of the 2020 M8 Competition has been introduced in Canada. Dubbed the Individual Manufaktur Edition, it will be produced in just 20 units, 10 in Fire Red and 10 in Frozen Black. While it may seem as though this special edition has been introduced simply to milk the launch of the new M car, it does have a connection with the brand’s history.

In the early 1990s, BMW secretly developed a widebody M8 prototype that was painted in Fire Red. The German car manufacturer refused to acknowledge the existence of the car until 2010, and it’s certainly quite a mythical machine in the history of the M division.

Canada’s special Individual Manufaktor Edition models don’t just feature special paint finishes. All 20 units come complete with various M Performance parts including carbon fiber parts for the kidney grille, air intake surrounds, side skirts, rear diffuser, and lip spoiler. As for the cabin, there is only one trim configuration that incorporates full Merino leather finished in Sakhir Orange and Black with Sakhir Orange contrast stitching throughout.

Owners of the limited-edition model will be reminded they are driving something special thanks to a ‘BMW Individual Manufaktor’ inscription on the carbon fiber cupholder and wireless phone charging tray cover.

The car is mechanically identical to the standard M8 Competition. That means it’s powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 delivering 617 HP and 750 Nm of torque. Prices start at CAD 198,000 (US$ 149,800).
