The 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show hosts the mildly
facelifted 2020 Smart EQ Fortwo and 2020 Smart EQ Forfour, the last Smart
models that don’t carry any input from Geely. As you probably know, the
next-generation of Smart vehicles will be co-developed by Geely and Daimler.
The Chinese will engineer the new EVs scheduled to launch in 2022 while the
Germans will style them.
Until then, Smart is presenting the facelifted EQ
Fortwo and EQ Forfour electric vehicles in Frankfurt. As you can see, the
updates are on the subtle side, with the electric city cars gaining discreet
exterior tweaks and a new infotainment system.
The 2020 Smart EQ Fortwo and Forfour introduce
styling updates inspired by the ForEase and ForEase+ concept cars such as the
redesigned radiator grilles, refreshed bumpers, optional full-LED headlights,
and funky LED taillights with a new signature.
Inside, the diminutive EVs gain a new 8-inch
infotainment system that offers integration with smartphones and promises to be
more intuitive and easier to use. There’s also a new center console featuring a
larger storage compartment in front of the shifter. According to Smart, that’s
big enough to hold modern smartphones or two coffee cups thanks to a removable
cup holder.
Smart has also revised the range structure, offering
three trim levels (Passion, Pulse, and Prime) and three equipment packages
(Advanced, Premium, and Exclusive).
No changes have been made to the powertrain, with
the electric motor delivering 80 hp and 160 Nm of torque
and sourcing electricity from a 17.6 kWh lithium-ion battery.
