The brand new
Cupra Leon ST coming our way. A prototype of the fast wagon has been spotted
for the first time in Spain and we have to admit it looks quite promising,
despite the fact that it’s fully wrapped in camouflage tape. The front end styling is not
exactly a surprise as we’ve already seen prototypes of the next-generation
Cupra Leon hot hatch during testing and the wagon looks similar. However, some
details are different, including the mesh used for the grilles, and the more
aggressive lower bumper treatment.
This Cupra Leon ST prototype appears more aggressive
than the Cupra Leon test cars we’ve seen so far, including at the rear where it
features quad exhausts instead of two oval tailpipes as seen on the hatch. This
leads us to believe this particular Cupra Leon ST prototype is the full-blown
version packing a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine with at least 300 PS (and
a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic.
In all likelihood, this means the Cupra Leon hatches
spotted before feature the “base” 245 PS plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The alloy wheels also feature a different design on the wagon and we can now
see that the third brake light is now between the taillights and not above the
rear screen.
Undoubtedly, the wagon will be a much more practical and roomier choice than the hatch. The upcoming Cupra Leon ST will be longer
than its predecessor and the photos make it apparent: there’s a lot of metal
between the rear axle and the tip of the rear bumper.
The all-new Cupra Leon ST is expected to debut about
a year from now and arrive in dealerships in early 2021. The Cupra Leon hatch
will launch about six months earlier but something tells us the ST version will
be worth the wait, especially if it will be available with an AWD system as
before.
