Lamborghini has been scooped testing a bright green
Urus at the Nurburgring, indicating that a new, potentially faster, version
could be coming our way. Limited details about the Urus in question are known but it certainly
sounds very similar to the existing model, indicating it is still powered by
the VW Group’s 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, ruling out the possibility of a
naturally aspirated V10 or V12 derivative.
The Italian car manufacturer has confirmed multiple
times in the past that the Urus will eventually get a hybrid variant and
there’s a possibility this prototype could be that model. Little is known about
the powertrain that could power this Urus version, but it would likely be very
similar to the system used by both the Porsche Panamera and Cayenne Turbo S
E-Hybrid where its puts out 670 HP, a healthy dose more than the 641 HP of the
standard Urus.
Another possibility is that the Urus being tested is
a prototype for a lightweight and more hardcore version. Lamborghini’s head of
research and development Maurizio Reggiani confirmed the company could produce
a road-going version of the Urus ST-X racer a few months ago. The ST-X has only
been shown off in concept form so far, but will be used in an upcoming one-make
racing series. It weighs roughly 25 per cent less than the standard Urus and
similar weight savings could be made for a street-legal variant.
Whatever Lamborghini is up to, it’s clear that it
will look to grow the Urus family to bump up sales even further.
