Media first learned last fall that Volkswagen AG was
working on a new MPV. Since then, several sets of spy photos showing a
camouflaged prototype of the vehicle have been posted online. A few days ago,
spotters have tracked down and photographed the van in its final production
version – and with the rear end exposed.
The pics betray the name of the car: Viloran. It
looks like China will become its main target market and country of origin. If
so, Volkswagen-SAIC joint enterprise will handle the assembly process. Earlier photos distinctly showed us a car with a
Touareg-like front end. Chrome is popular with Chinese customers, which explains
the shiny horizontal bars on the lower front grille and the rear bumper. A thin
chrome strip also connects the taillights.
Apparently, the new MPV will be based on the MQB
platform and ship with a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated at
220 hp. The international premiere should happen before the end of the year.
