Wiesmann has released more details about its
upcoming comeback with the ‘Project Gecko’, a new hand-built sports car that’s
designed as a modern take on the cult MF5. Project Gecko will be engineered
and built at Wiesmann’s original factory in Dülmen, Germany, based on an
all-new lightweight platform. The exterior design is being described as an
evolution of the brand’s characteristic retro look while power will come from
BMW M’s twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine, originaly found in models like the M5.
Like the MF 5, Wiesmann’s new sports car will have a
front-mid engine setup and rear-wheel drive while the transmission will
probably be the same automatic unit as found in the V8-powered BMW M models. The partnership between Wiesmann
and BMW will continue into the company’s new era, meaning that both powertrain
and electrical systems will come from Munich, as it was always the case with
the niche sports car maker.
Wiesmann’s relaunch is headed by Roheen Berry, who’s
working with his brother Sahir on the project, which started three years ago.
“This last true independent manufacturer of German sports cars is back and has
an exciting future to look forward to,” said Roheen Berry. “When we set out on
this journey we said we wanted to re-engineer an icon and we are on track to do
exactly that.”
Wiesmann’s ‘Project Gecko’ will morph into a sports
car that’s up to the latest standards in order to conform to regulations in key
markets. Production of the new model will start in 2020, with more technical
details to be announced over the coming months.
