The third generation Chevrolet Equinox only recently celebrated its second anniversary, but GM been working on an updated iteration since earlier this year. Even if it’s only a mid-cycle refresh, the prototypes we’ve seen on the road, including the one spied in Death Valley on video below, feature thick layers of camouflage, especially at the front end, suggesting that this is where designers have concentrated most of their efforts.

As we’ve previously reported, the 2020 (keep in mind it could get a 2021MY moniker instead) Equinox will be getting a new grille and headlights that mimic the pattern of those found on the Blazer. The rear end has been restyled too, with the changes made to the taillights, bumper and tailpipes. As a finishing touch, the SUV will get newly styled wheels too.

Beneath the new skin lies the same Delta platform, which allows the implementation of several power units. The current Equinox comes with 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter gasoline burners, rated at 170 and 252 hp, respectively, as well as a 1.6-liter diesel with 136 hp.

An SS variant of the vehicle has been the subject of speculation, and if it happens, it will receive a sportier exterior, larger wheels and interior tweaks, alongside upgrades in braking and suspension and a more powerful engine. The bowtie brand could present the facelifted Equinox as early as the end of the year, though it’s more likely to happen sometime in 2020.
