Shortly after the new 488 GT3 Evo was presented, Ferrari has unveiled the new 488 Challenge Evo, which has also been updated for 2020. Ferrari’s aim with the updated 488 Challenge Evo was to “maximise the synergy between aerodynamics and vehicle dynamics” and did this in part by tweaking the aerodynamics.

The automaker’s technical department and the its Styling Centre have crafted a new front end that is 30 per cent more aerodynamically efficient than the outgoing 488 Challenge. Among the changes made are an extended front overhang to boost downforce and optimize balance, lengthened radiator grille intakes, and a new U-shaped intake at the center of the bumper to feed cool air to the front brakes.

Other modifications at the front include a larger splitter with turning vanes and the addition of additional canards. Elsewhere, the race car shares some similarities to the FXX-K with a new rear wing to drastically boost downforce. All up, the 488 Challenge Evo has 50 per cent more downforce than the current 488 Challenge.

A first for Ferrari’s one-make series featuring the 488 Challenge Evo is the option for front downforce to be modified independently of the rear so the driver can adjust the aerodynamic balance without having to change the ride height.

Ferrari also worked extensively with Pirelli to develop new tires for the racer. The car also features new E-Diff3 and F1-TCS control systems based on the marque’s Side Slip Control (SSC) technology. Some final changes have been made inside with a new steering wheel, ABS management system incorporated in the Manettino switch, and a new rear camera to improve visibility.

Racing teams can purchase the 488 Challenge Evo as a new car, or can upgrade their existing 488 Challenge racers with the new parts.
