Porsche is giving
enthusiasts a treat for Halloween as the company has confirmed the 2020 911
will be offered with a seven-speed manual transmission. The DIY gearbox will be
a no-cost option on a handful of models including the 911 Carrera S and 4S
Coupe and Cabriolet. It remains unclear if the manual will eventually be
offered on the entry-level Carrera, but fans can finally breathe a sigh of
relief as they’ll have an alternative to the eight-speed PDK transmission.
However, drivers
will have to pay a performance penalty as Porsche said the manual 911 Carrera S
will require approximately four seconds to hit 96 km/h. That’s quite a
bit slower than the PDK variant which can run from 0-96 km/h in as
little as 3.3 seconds when equipped with the Sport Chrono Package.
Thankfully, the top
speed isn’t affected as Porsche said the car can exceed 306 km/h.
That’s on par with the PDK variant which tops out at 307 km/h.
Another positive is the curb weight falls to 1,496 kg. This means
the manual variant is 38.1 kg lighter than the PDK model.
Putting performance
specs aside for a moment, manual 911s will come standard with the Sport Chrono
Package that includes dynamic drivetrain mounts, a rev-matching function and a
PSM Sport mode. The cars will also have a mechanical limited-slip differential
with a torque vectoring function.
The cars are
currently available to order and are slated to arrive in US dealerships next
spring. Pricing starts at US$ 113,300 for the 911 Carrera S manual, while the 911
Carrera 4S Cabriolet will retail for US$ 133,400 – excluding a US$ 1,350 delivery,
processing and handling fee.
