The eighth generation of the Volkswagen Golf has only just debuted, and the performance-oriented GTI series remains slated for launch next year – but it looks almost finished. Based on the latest spy shots, the GTI version boasts the usual scope of improvements: larger front air intakes, red brake calipers, dual tailpipes, and sports seats inside.
The powertrain is where things should start to get really interesting; unfortunately, no specs have been provided to date. The seventh generation of the Golf GTI came with a wide assortment of engines rated between 230 hp and 350 Nm to 310 hp and 380 Nm.
The newcomer will arrive packing a brand-new two-liter, four-cylinder engine available with manual and dual-clutch transmission types. Its rumored output amounts to 258 hp in the standard configuration and 298 hp in the range-topping GTI TCR. A mild-hybrid GTI is also possible, but a full-fledged hybrid powertrain is going to remain exclusive to the Golf GTE.
Finally, Volkswagen may choose to launch a special Cupo series of the GTI with 310 – 330 hp under the hood. The drive will stay on the front axle until the Golf R debuts with AWD and best-in-class performance (rumored to be 333 hp).
