The fourth-gen BMW X5 comes with a number of
different powertrains, and depending on the market, you can get it with the
usual diesel and petrol units, as well as in range-topping X5 M guise. Soon to
join the lineup at dealers in select countries is the xDrive45e.
Unveiled a couple of months ago, the plug-in hybrid
X5 combines 3.0-liter inline-six engine with an electric motor for a combined
output of 394 PS and 600 Nm of torque.
The premium mid-size SUV has four-wheel drive and an
eight-speed automatic transmission, and does the 0-100 km/h in just
5.6 seconds, performance that used to be the privilege of the fastest
high-riding vehicles until a few years ago.
Where the road and legislation allow it, it will max out at 235 km/h. More
importantly, though, it will do up to 135 km/h in all-electric mode,
with a claimed range of 67-87 km in the WLTP test cycle with the
24 kWh lithium-ion battery fully charged. Tested under the same regulations,
the fuel economy is as low as 1.2 l/100 km (196 mpg US / 235 mpg UK) and CO2
emissions are 27 g/km.
