Tesla, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar and others already did an electric crossover, and now American
start-up Fisker wants to follow their example, with the Ocean.
A future rival to
the likes of the Model Y, it will be unveiled in prototype form on January 4,
next year. If everything goes as planned, then high-volume deliveries should
kick off in 2022, but before that, Henrik Fisker’s company will start taking
reservations for it on November 27.
It won’t be the
typical buying experience either, as the Ocean, which will have a sub-US$ 40,000
starting price, is all about the future, so Fisker will launch a mobile
app-based leasing program. Described as the “world’s most sustainable vehicle”,
it uses several green materials, like the carpeting made from recycled nylon,
sourced from abandoned fishing nets pulled from the oceans. The vegan interior trim
has become more popular recently, and the Ocean features that too, as well as
rubber repurposed from waste generated during tire making.
The 4,640 mm long vehicle will feature a full-length solar roof that will boost
efficiency and could offer up to 1,000 free miles (1,610 km) each year. The
Ocean has a targeted range of 402-483 km on a single charge,
depending on the driving conditions, enabled by the 80 kWh lithium-ion battery.
