McLaren Special Operations has pumped out a number
of limited editions over the years and the latest is based on the 600LT. Dubbed the Comet Fade, the
one-off model was commissioned by a long-time customer of McLaren Toronto and
draws inspiration from the “brightness and speed of a comet.”
Given that comets are small and icy celestial bodies
that produce a “visually distinctive signature fading from bright to dark,” the
Special Operations team recreated this effect with a bespoke exterior that
starts with Cerulean Blue, fades to Defined Burton Blue and finishes with
Atlantic Blue. McLaren says this was a “painstaking multi-step process” which
required 120 hours to complete.
Besides the special paint job, the car has been
equipped with a visible carbon fiber roof scoop that pays tribute to the
McLaren F1. The customer also ordered three different carbon fiber packages and
this means the front splitter, side skirts, rear bumper, rear diffuser, rear
spoiler, rear wing and mirror caps are all constructed from the lightweight
material. Last but not least, the car rides on ultra-lightweight forged wheels
which feature a gloss black finish that is contrasted by polished carbon
ceramic brake calipers.
The special styling continues in the interior as the
cabin is awash with blue accents which mimic those on the exterior. The model
also has carbon fiber racing seats as well as carbon fiber interior trim.
Like the standard 600LT, the Comet Fade features a
twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 engine that produces 592 hp and 627 Nm of torque. It is connected to a seven-speed SSG transmission
which enables the car to rocket from 0-96 km/h in 2.8 seconds,
before hitting a top speed of 328 km/h.
