A
recent batch of spy images revealed a great deal about the upcoming all-new
2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, as far as its styling is concerned. Now,
we’ve known for some time that the next-gen S-Class was getting ‘Sensually
Purified’, as per Mercedes‘ latest design language. But in a car that large,
shrinking the light units down in size seemed a bit counter intuitive, which
explains why previous renderings of the car have yet to blow anyone’s mind.
This
time though, the folks at Kolesa came up with a more realistic design, one that
includes the new body shape, the flush door handles, the missing roof antenna
and a more robust rear end design, with a thinner horizontal insert and sleeker
taillights that look like a mix between those on the CLA, CLS and A-Class
Sedan.
The
S-Class is one of those iconic nameplates that carmakers just can’t afford to
get wrong, ever – like the Porsche 911, Ford Mustang and so on. For some reason
though, we’re still a little nervous regarding this upcoming new one. Of
course, the fact that some of Mercedes‘ latest models feature one or two
awkward angles (the 2020 CLS being the best example), doesn’t help. With the
“S”, Mercedes can’t afford any awkwardness of any kind.
As
for the interior, we already know that this upcoming flagship Benz model will
ditch the horizontal dual-screen layout in favor of a more Tesla-like design,
with a massive portrait-style display in place of a traditional center console. The 2020 Mercedes S-Class will reportedly
be powered by 2.9-liter and 3.0-liter hybrid six-cylinder petrol and diesel
engines, with zero-emission ranges of up to 100 km. AMG-powered
4.0-liter V8 variants with mild-hybrid, twin-turbocharged setups will join the
lineup too.
