BMW is stepping up its electric vehicle game and one model that’s about to go down the zero-emission route is the X2, which was spotted during some cold weather testing. At a first glance, this prototype, which was seen in Sweden, tries to pass as a plug-in hybrid. It wears the xDrive25e badge on the tailgate and even has a fake exhaust pipe that tries to trick us into thinking that it still has an internal combustion mill under the hood.

Nonetheless, it’s the ‘Electric Test Vehicle’ stickers that you want to pay attention to, as they’re the only things that give away its green nature. You see, the X2 PHEV that was spied testing on different occasions had ‘Hybrid Test Vehicle’ stickers, alongside different shaped bumpers.

This prototype keeps the fuel filler cap on the right rear fender and plug-in port on the left front fender, in yet another attempt to create a diversion, but one of them is real and will be used to charge the battery pack; we just don’t know which one, though.

As far as official details go, BMW has refrained from commenting on an electric version of the X2. We do know that the new-gen 1-Series, which shares the same platform, will launch with a zero-emission powertrain by 2021, probably under the i1 moniker, so the X2 should follow it, maybe with ix2 badges.
