The
BMW X7 Pickup is one of the more interesting vehicles built by BMW in recent
years, and even though it won’t hit the production line, it has proven to be
quite a head-turner. Unveiled
back in July, the X7 Pickup was created purely for show purposes and was
recently put on display at BMW Welt next to the company’s headquarters in
Munich.
Because
the vehicle is based on the X7, it features a larger cabin than most mid-size
pickup trucks but has a much shorter bed. Thus, while it is pictured with a BMW
F 850 GS motorcycle in its bed, almost half of the bike is sticking out and the
tailgate has been folded down to support it. If this were a real pickup truck
heading to the production line, you can be assured that buyers would demand a
much larger bed.
Behind
the special BMW X7 Pickup were a number of the company’s trainees who worked
with the Concept Vehicle Construction and Model Technology divisions from BMW.
Creating the one-off took approximately 10 months and, thanks to the comprehensive
use of carbon fiber reinforced plastics, the finished creation actually weighs
200 kg less than an actual X7. Not bad when you consider it is
actually 10 cm longer than the SUV on which it is based.
A
couple of years ago, it seemed possible BMW could follow the Mercedes-Benz
X-Class into the market and launch a pickup of its own. However, there’s little
chance of that happening as even Mercedes itself is expected to kill off the
X-Class sooner or later.
