The second model in Volkswagen’s all-new electric vehicle range, the VW ID.4, has been snapped by Carscoops reader Bartek in Europe. Our own spy photographers recently snapped the VW ID.4 undergoing winter testing last month and for the most part, this prototype looks largely the same. However, it appears to be free of virtually any camouflage with the exception of some black tape across the rear fascia.
The intriguing shape of the ID.4 is perhaps the first thing that strikes you. Thanks to the car’s all-electric powertrain, VW’s designers have been able to reduce the front and rear overhangs and expand the size of the cabin without increasing the electric crossover’s footprint. The sharp taillights are also clearly identifiable as being from a VW.
Underpinning the ID.4 will be the MEB modular electric architecture of the smaller ID.3 hatchback. Unlike its smaller sibling, the ID.4 won’t rely exclusively on a single electric motor and will feature two electric motors to deliver a combined 302 hp. Battery pack options are expected to be carried over from the ID.3, including a base 45 kWh pack, a mid-range 58 kWh one, and a range-topping 77 kWh battery pack with ranges sitting at 330 km, 420 km, and 550 km respectively.
VW will commence production of the ID.4 in Europe this year and from 2022, start building it at the company’s Chattanooga plant in Tennessee.
