The New York Auto Show is
still months away, but California-based Hyperion will use the event to
introduce what appears to be a supercar. Little is known about the model, but
the company specializes in hydrogen generation, storage and propulsion. Now,
their consumer products division is promising to “introduce space-age
technology for the road” through Hyperion Motors.
That’s not much to go on, but
the company teased “This next generation of Hyperion products are being
developed with NASA to deliver some of the most advanced technologies on
Earth.” The firm is keeping details under wraps, but a quick check online shows
they were teasing a vehicle as far back as 2015. Hyperion Motors then went
silent for approximately three years, before teasing the model last January and
promising “The cover comes off in 2019, buckle up!”
Let’s hope no one took their
advice seriously as 2019 came and went without any sign of the car. However,
that will apparently change this April. While there’s no word on specifics, the
teaser image appear to show a stylish supercar with bulging fenders and a
canopy-like greenhouse. However, earlier pictures depict an ungainly four-door
sedan with an old school rear end.
Whatever form the vehicle
takes, it will likely run on hydrogen given Hyperion’s focus and a recent
Facebook post noting “Hydrogen, born of water, creates pure energy as it passes
through a fuel cell to become water once more.”
Of course, the model could
also run on buzzwords considering Hyperion’s vague promises of “casting aside
the status quo” and “beauty without limits.”
