Ford has announced it is bringing back the
XLT Sport Appearance Package on the 2021 Explorer this summer. The popular pack
promises a more upscale appearance courtesy of unique Carbonized Gray 20-inch
wheels with matching grille, skid plates and hood lettering, as well as dual
chrome exhaust tips. Inside, the new model will get ActiveX Light Slate
two-tone seats with accent stitching, matching center console lid and door trim
panels, as well as satin silver interior trim, among other things.
Previously, the popular appearance package
accounted for one of every four Explorer XLT models sold and Ford is hoping its
share will increase with the 2021 model. Ford did not reveal photos of the 2021
Explorer XLT Sport Appearance Package and didn’t say when it will be unveiled.
However, given the timing of the announcement, we expect to see it at the
Chicago Auto Show later this week.
In the same press release, Ford talked
about how successful the 2020 Explorer ST is. Apparently, the performance SUV
is surpassing sales expectations and attracting new customers who trade-in
their European luxury SUVs for Explorer STs.
More specifically, the 2020 Explorer ST
accounts for 21 percent of overall Explorer sales, with nearly 28 percent of
non-Ford trade-ins coming from luxury brands. In addition, the 400 HP model is
helping Explorer retain its title as America’s all-time best-selling SUV.
Ford sold its 8 millionth Explorer in
January, three decades since the introduction of the nameplate in 1990.
According to the Blue Oval, the latest Explorer remains a strong choice for
young adults – 18 percent of buyers are 18 to 35 years old and 46 percent are
36 to 55 years old.
