Subaru has confirmed that the 2021
Crosstrek will be available with a new engine in the United States. While
recently speaking during an NAGA Live event at an auto dealers’ convention in
Las Vegas, Subaru of America chief executive Tom Doll said a new 2.5-liter unit
will be launched on the back of customer complaints about the current 2.0-liter
being underpowered.
It is understood that this 2.5-liter
engine will be available in the Crosstrek Sport and Crosstrek Limited trim
levels. Subaru already offers a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine in vehicles
including the Forester, Outback, and Legacy and it is this same powertrain the
Crosstrek will receive. In its current form, it is good for 182 HP and 239 Nm – figures that will likely be retained for the Crosstrek.
The current 2.0-liter four-cylinder
available with the Crosstrek makes 152 HP and 197 Nm of torque.
There is also a Hybrid variant on the market, offering up 148 HP.
No pricing details were mentioned about Crosstrek
Sport and Limited models equipped with the 2.5-liter engine, but one can assume
it will come at a small premium over the 2.0-liter models when it lands later
this year. It also remains to be seen if it will be offered with both a
six-speed manual transmission and a CVT like the 2.0-liter.
