Tesla isn’t known for hitting deadlines,
but the company has delivered the first Model Ys ahead of schedule. In a tweet,
the automaker confirmed the news and released a short video showing the
crossover being built and driven. Essentially a Model 3 on stilts, the Model Y
is expected to become one of Tesla’s top-selling vehicles thanks to its
combination of practicality and affordable pricing.
Speaking of the latter, the Long Range
Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive variant starts at US$ 52,990. The model can accelerate
from 0-96 km/h in 4.8 seconds and hit a top speed of 217
km/h. More importantly, it can travel approximately 509 km on a
single charge.
Customers can also opt for a Performance
variant which begins at US$ 60,990. It features upgraded motors that allow the
crossover to rocket from 0-96 km/h in just 3.5 seconds. The top
speed also increases to 233 km/h, while the range only falls by 1.6 km.
Besides the improved performance, the range-topping
variant has a lowered suspension, high-performance brakes and 21-inch
Ãœberturbine wheels. Customers can also add an optional Performance Upgrade
package which increases the top speed to 250 km/h. A more affordable
standard range variant is slated to arrive early next year and start at US$ 39,000. In return for the more affordable price tag, the range will be reduced
to approximately 370 km.
