A prototype of the long-awaited 2021
Mercedes-AMG One has been snapped during recent testing at a secret location. The
Mercedes-AMG One has been a long time coming and was first unveiled in
September 2017 with the promise that the first customer deliveries would
commence in 2019. However, a series of issues have pushed back the launch of
the hybrid hypercar with it now not expected to land in the garages of
customers until next year.
This particular prototype is still covered
in black and white camouflage but given that we’ve already seen the car
presented in concept form and Mercedes-AMG itself has shared images of test
cars doing the rounds, we already have a good idea of what the finished car
will look like.
One noteworthy aspect of this prototype is
that the adjustable rear wing is in its lowered position and considering the
banked circuit the car was testing on, it’s quite possible that AMG engineers
were testing out the car’s abilities at high speeds.
Driving the AMG One will be a Formula
1-derived powertrain that includes a 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine and no
less than four electric motors. The finished car is expected to pump out 986 hp
and should be able to hit 200 km/h in less than six seconds while
continuing through to a top speed exceeding 350 km/h. It will have an
all-electric range of 25 km although we suspect owners will rarely
drive this beast on electric power alone.
Mercedes first revealed that the AMG One
would be delayed back in September 2018 due to challenges getting the F1 engine
to idle at 1,200 rpm, as opposed to the 5,000 rpm that the engine idles at in a
Mercedes F1 car.
