As we get closer to the world debut of the
all-new 2021 S-Class in September, Mercedes-Benz peels the camouflage off its
test prototypes, revealing more design details. It’s the case with these new
spy shots of an S-Class prototype which shows its headlights and taillights
fully undisguised. The grille, bumpers and doors are covered in a
white thin material but that doesn’t do a great job of hiding the shape of Mercedes‘
upcoming flagship.
At the front, the 2021 S-Class adopts
teardrop-shaped headlights similar to those featured on the facelifted E-Class
though more elongated. The integrated LED DRLs give the headlamps the “frowning
eyebrow” look seen on the brand’s latest models. The lamps on this prototype
seem to be the full matrix LED units.
The thin camouflage cover also provides a
look at the big grille and sporty-looking bumper with pronounced creases and
big air intakes. This prototype seems to be in AMG Line guise given the
AMG-branded 19-inch wheels, sharp side sills, and sporty rear bumper featuring
a diffuser flanked by two oval tailpipe trim elements which (surprise!) don’t
seem to be fake. The photos also give us an uncensored look at the LED taillights
which adopt a triangular shape reminiscent of the CLS. The lamps likely feature
dynamic turn signals and animated on-off sequence.
Much of the tech-laden interior is no
longer a secret yet this prototype still features camouflage on the dashboard.
The new S-Class comes with up to five large screens in the cabin powered by the
second-generation MBUX infotainment system which debuts in the flagship luxury
sedan.
The new S-Class is built on the MRA II
rear-wheel drive platform that makes extensive use of carbon fiber and aluminum
in its construction. This architecture will also bring with it rear-wheel
steering, Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities, active suspension, and more.
Powertrain details remain unconfirmed though electrification will be present across
the range, including various 48-volt mild-hybrid models and a plug-in hybrid.
