The third-generation all-new BMW X1 made
its spy debut in prototype form early last month, wearing fully-body
camouflage. In spite of that, we found it rather easy to gauge its overall
shape and even a few design traits, such as the 2-Series Active Tourer-like
taillights, smaller in size than those of the current-generation X1, which by
the way received some upgrades from BMW only about a year ago.
Now, if you’ve been hoping for a peak
underneath all that camo, the best we can do for you right now is to show you
this illustration courtesy of Kolesa. Like the prototype, this render has a
decently-sized grille and sharper, upward-pointing headlights. At the rear, we
can see the smaller taillights, although their exact shape is yet to be determined,
so what you have here is more of a guess.
What we don’t see rendered is the
prototype’s wagon-like rear end design, where the taillights are more or less
level with the door handles, not the door mirrors. Things will of course become
more clear over time as BMW will send out additional test cars.
As far as the interior is concerned, we
expect it to mirror that of the upcoming 2-Series Active Tourer, which would
mean having a curved, driver-oriented dual display layout, featuring a
redesigned dashboard and center console. Power will ultimately come via a range
of gasoline and diesel options (depending on market), while a plug-in hybrid
model should be in the cards too.
