Fisker has announced it is in advanced
talks with the Extreme E off-road racing series and could field a works team in
the inaugural 2021 season. Extreme E was founded by Alejandro Agag, the same
man who was behind the formation of Formula E, and is scheduled to kick off in
Senegal in January 2021.
In a statement, Agag said: “Creating the
world’s most sustainable racing series is the perfect launch platform for
[Fisker’s] new Ocean SUV as well as providing a challenging testing environment
for product durability.” Alejandro brought electric vehicle racing into the
mainstream with Formula E and I fully support his vision to reinvent off-road
racing at the same time as creating an education platform for the threats posed
by climate change. Extreme E and Fisker Inc. are completely aligned in our
mission and values,” Fisker said.
If Fisker does decided to enter Extreme E,
it won’t do so with the Ocean SUV. Instead, all vehicles competing will be
based around the Odyssey 21, an extreme off-roader developed by French company
Spark and using batteries designed by the Williams Formula 1 team.
Nevertheless, teams competing in Extreme E will need to develop their own
electric motor and inverter and will also be able to design certain body panels
so the racer can somewhat resemble their road car.
