Despite the launch of a new (but very different) model, the classic Land Rover Defender still has a large cult following. We see custom projects and restomods based on the Defender almost on a daily basis and we’re sure this trend will carry on for many years to come. The latest project to catch our eyes is the so-called Twisted NAS-E 4×4, an electric conversion of the rugged off-roader.

Limited to just 30 vehicles, the Twisted NAS-E 4×4 owes its name to the original North American Specification (NAS) short-wheelbase Soft-Top 90 body type, with the E in the name obviously standing for ‘Electric’.

NAS-E is the first hero vehicle of the Twisted Legacy collection, a re-imagining of the original North American-specification Land Rover Defender made by Twisted Automotive. Each of the 30 units will be hand-built and individually numbered, as well as compliant with all North American EV Regulations and California CARB regulations.

Customers will be able to choose between two trim levels, the NAS-E and NAS-E Plus. The base model features a Remy BorgWarner motor delivering 214 HP and more than 380 Nm of torque. The Plus model brings a performance increase to 320 HP and 420 Nm of torque. Power comes from a 60 kWh battery that enables a driving range of 322 km. A 22 kWh charging system comes standard, with fast charging also available.

The changes go beyond the electric conversion, with Twisted Automotive also upgrading the suspension with custom-valved dampers for superior traction and “dramatically reduced understeer”. Additionally, the stock brakes are replaced by Twisted Performance six-piston front brakes and four-piston rear brakes equipped with hard-use RS29 pads. ABS and TCS are also added. As the name suggests, the NAS-E 4×4 remains four-wheel-drive, featuring a 4WD gear-reduction direct transmission thanks to a step-down transfer case for high and low-range use.

The electric off-roader is available in three California-inspired color options (Malibu, Yosemite and Tahoe), with each one to be made in 10 units. All models feature Twisted Sport Wheels finished in silver, a Twisted Stage One front end, and a roll cage and Bimini hood. The NAS-E Plus adds a brush bar, side steps, roll-bar spotlights, body stripe decal, and black side sills.

The interior is also significantly upgraded and features Cream leather seats with Alston Alcantara inserts, a three-seat bench across the front row with detachable headrests and an infotainment system with an EV system management touchscreen and navigation. Other notable goodies include the bespoke eight-channel audio system, rearview camera with wide angle, air conditioning, and ‘spray down’ unique flooring. Twisted Automotive will charge US$ 185,000 for the NAS-E and US$ 210,000 for the NAS-E Plus.
