Mercedes is putting the final touches on the
upcoming S-Class, which is set to debut on September 2 during a special online event. A test car was once again spotted
by Carscoops spies, featuring very little camouflage on areas like around the
headlights and the rear fascia, leaving the rest of the car completely naked. We
already have a pretty good idea of what the new German flagship luxury sedan
will look like inside and outside but that didn’t stop Mercedes from launching
a teasing campaign, showing off selected highlights of the new S-Class.
As with every new S-Class, the new
generation will be unsurprisingly a technological tour de force, featuring
things like all-wheel steering, a suspension that raises the body just before
an impending side collision to better protect its passengers, a new version of
the MBUX infotainment system and the list goes on. The all-wheel steering
system, in particular, is reportedly going to give the new S-Class a tighter
turning circle than any rival in the segment and will be even better than even
the A-Class. That’s pretty impressive for a sedan of this
size.
The interior of the new 2021 Mercedes
S-Class will be perhaps the biggest departure, featuring up to five displays.
The carmaker opted to remove almost any hard button and switch compared to the
outgoing model. The center touchscreen display for the infotainment system
measures 12.8 inches in diameter and features haptic feedback while the
instrument cluster will be showing information with a 3D effect.
Underpinning the new Mercedes flagship
will be the MRA-II platform, which uses more aluminum than before in addition
to carbon fiber to make the S-Class lighter than the current model. The new
S-Class will also feature a longer wheelbase than the outgoing model in every
bodystyle, including the standard model, the LWB variant, and the more
limo-like Extended versions.
The engine range will be electrified,
starting with mild-hybrid 48-volt versions of the company’s straight-six petrol
and diesel engines. A plug-in hybrid variant of the former will also become
available, while the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 will also be offered in different
states of tune with up to 800 HP.
