Hyundai has announced the formation of its
new Ioniq sub-brand, dedicated to battery electric vehicles. Through the Ioniq
brand, Hyundai will introduce three new dedicated models over the coming four
years and is promising further models in the years to come. Hyundai says it
will combine its current EV capabilities such as ultra-fast charging, spacious
interiors, and battery-supplied power with “future innovations that combine
design, technologies and services to integrate in-car and out-of-car
experiences for a seamless journey.”
The three models announced for the Ioniq
brand are the Ioniq 5, 6, and 7, with even numbers to be used for sedans and
odd numbers dedicated to SUVs. The first model to launch under the brand will
be the Ioniq 5 midsize crossover arriving in early 2021. This model is based on
Hyundai’s 45 EV Concept that was unveiled at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
Hyundai says its “designers took inspiration from the past and integrated it
with cutting-edge parametric pixels” to create a design that will be
incorporated into future Ioniq models.
In 2022, Hyundai will introduce the Ioniq
6 sedan, this time based on the company’s Prophecy concept revealed back in
March. In early 2024, a large SUV by the name of the Ioniq 7 will be
introduced. All Ioniq models will sit on an Electric Global Modular Platform
(E-GMP) that offers fast charging capability. Hyundai says this platform will
also allow it to reimagine vehicle interiors and turn them into smart living
spaces.
The Ioniq was first used by Hyundai back
in 2016 to denote the Ioniq sedan, available in hybrid electric, plug-in
electric, and battery electric guises.
