Chevrolet has updated the popular Malibu
XL mid-size sedan in China by introducing a new powertrain. Sold alongside the
1.3-liter and 2.0-liter turbocharged units, which are mated to a CVT and a
9-speed automatic transmission respectively, the new mill has 1.5 liters in
displacement, direct-injection and turbocharging, and comes paired to a 9-speed
Hydra-Matic automatic gearbox.
The 1,490 cc lump produces 166 HP at 5,600 rpm and 250 Nm of torque between 1,700 and 4,400
rpm, which are good for a 0-100 km/h acceleration of 9.1 seconds and
a 205 km/h top speed. The automaker claims that it returns 37.3 mpg
US (6.3 l/100 km) on average, and 49 mpg (4.8 l/100 km) while cruising the highway
at a constant speed of 90 km/h.
Speaking of price, the new Malibu XL 1.5L
is offered in three versions in the People’s Republic, dubbed the Ruixing
Edition, Sharp Version and Ruilian Edition. Pricing starts at 164,900, 174,900
and 184,900 RMB respectively, which equals to US$ 23,915, US$ 25,366 and US$ 26,817 at
current exchange rates.
Besides the new powertrain, the 2021
Malibu XL also features Chevy’s upgraded MyLink+ infotainment system, with new
connectivity functions. Standard features include the OnStar telematics system,
Bosch’s new electronic safety system, tire pressure monitoring and others.
