Ford unveiled the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400
prototype earlier this year and now company has revealed performance
specifications. While the automaker previously said the model has more than
1,400 hp, Ford revealed it puts out 1,502 hp at the wheels.
That’s an insane amount of power and Ford
noted it’s the equivalent to more than three Mustang GTs. However, that number
shouldn’t be too surprising as the prototype is equipped with four electric
motors that each generate 469 hp.
The Cobra Jet is also a monster on the
track as it recently ran the quarter-mile in 8.27 seconds at 270
km/h. That sounds pretty impressive, but Dodge has referred to the 2021
Challenger Mopar Drag Pak as a “seven second turnkey race car” and that
suggests it’s even faster than the Mustang.
Of course equipping a drag racer with four
electric motors isn’t as simple as it sounds as Ford needed to create unique control
algorithms and chassis tuning strategies. Besides announcing more details, Ford
confirmed the electric Cobra Jet will be shown at the U.S. Nationals this
weekend. The prototype will make a public run down the strip and be piloted by
NHRA Funny Car driver Bob Tasca III.
