The 2021 VW Tiguan X has just been
unveiled to the world at the Beijing Auto Show and is currently on display in
flagship 380 TSI 4Motion guise. The Tiguan X is an SUV ‘coupe’ exclusive to the
Chinese market and has quite a bold exterior design. Up front, it has the same
fascia as the recently facelifted 2021 Tiguan and therefore includes sharp
headlights with LED daytime running lights and four chrome-finished horizontal
slats in the grille.
Where the Tiguan X starts to look distinct
from other variants is from the B-pillar and back. Like most SUV ‘coupes,’ the
roofline aggressively tapers down to a steeply raked rear window and a short
decklid. Also making the Tiguan X stand out from other variants out back are
the new taillights with a subtle LED light bar connecting them. There is also a
large badge with ‘Tiguan X’ lettering.
As this is the Tiguan X 380 TSI 4Motion
model, it is powered by a 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged petrol unit that produces
217 hp and 380 Nm of torque. Coupled to the engine is a seven-speed
DSG dual-clutch transmission and, as the model name implies, a 4Motion
all-wheel drive system. This particular model on display at the VW booth in
Beijing has the available R Line exterior package that includes distinctive
bumpers and new wheels.
Interestingly, the VW Tiguan X is based on
the long-wheelbase Tiguan, meaning it has a wheelbase of 2,791 mm. It has been developed and will be built by the SAIC-VW joint venture.
In China, prices for the compact SUV Coupe range from 246,000 to 306,000 Yuan
(US$ 36,100 to US$ 44,900 at today’s exchange rates).
