Another prototype of the next generation BMW M4 Convertible was set loose at the Nurburgring, but this time, it shed most of its camouflage allowing us to see how the new design language applies on the open-top version of the performance model. And yes, the front looks identical to the 2021 M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe donning the exact same nose job that has stirred up so many people on the internet.

Only the lower half of the rear end is covered, but we already know what those parts will look like from the M4 Coupe. Elsewhere, the car rides on the production wheels and sports a fabric soft top, unlike its predecessor’s folding metal hard top.

 

Having a fabric roof over the passenger compartment should result in significant weight savings, not to mention a lower center of gravity for improved handling. Expect the usual BMW M revisions beneath the skin, namely the stiffer suspension, re-tuned steering and bigger brakes, in addition to the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six breathing air from behind the bucktooth grille, hooked up to a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission, depending on the model.

As standard, the M4 Convertible will launch with 480 PS, whereas the full 510 PS will be available in the Competition variant. The rear-wheel drive layout isn’t going anywhere, but the M-tuned all-wheel drive system will join the range in the higher output Competition model. Despite losing most of its spy-shooter confusing attire, BMW won’t launch the new M4 Convertible in dealerships until 2021, though we could see official photos before the end of this year.
