Order books in Europe are officially open for the VW Touareg eHybrid and Touareg R plug-in hybrid, the former priced from 72,378 euros (US$ 84,888) in Germany, while the latter from 84,660 euros (US$ 99,293). Both models feature the same plug-in hybrid drivetrain, albeit with 381 PS for the eHybrid and 462 PS for the R variant. Both however offer the same electric range of up to 47 km as per WLTP metrics.

Standard equipment includes a 4-zone climate control system, the Innovision Cockpit with digital instruments, the Discover Premium top navigation system and a panoramic sliding/tilting roof. The Touareg R meanwhile also has IQ.Light – LED matrix headlights as standard.

Powered by an electric motor and a V6 turbocharged gasoline unit, these plug-in hybrid variants offer very low fuel and energy consumption for distances shorter than 100 km when the battery is charged – 2.6 l/100 km and 24.2 kWh/100 km for the Touareg eHybrid and 2.7 l/100 km and 24.4 kWh/100 km for the Touareg R. Both specs are designed to handle a maximum trailer weight of 3.5 tonnes, which VW says is “exceptionally high” for hybrid models, adding that you can also tow that weight while you’re in EV mode.

Furthermore, the Touareg premium SUV also happens to be the first VW that can be automatically driven in and out of a parking space thanks to its new Park Assist feature with remote control. This is particularly useful seen as how Park Assist works not just with the eHybrid and R variants’ V6 gasoline unit, but also the electric motor.
