There’s an all-new VW Golf Variant estate model in town and, just like before, it’s joined by a Golf Alltrack high-riding AWD range-topper. Following the initial information and photos Volkswagen released in September, we can now show you the two new models in greater detail courtesy of a new image gallery and more detailed information.

Based on the eighth-generation Golf launched last year, the Golf Variant is 66 mm longer than its predecessor and offers a larger maximum load space of up to 1,642 liters. The 2021 Golf Variant also has a longer wheelbase, which translates into improved maximum legroom for rear passengers (+38 mm).

                                                                  

The interior looks very different than before, especially the dashboard which features digital touch panels, touch sliders, and screens instead of conventional buttons and analog displays. All Golf Variant models have a navigation system with access to mobile online services on board at no extra charge, with VW also offering an optional head-up display.

At the market launch in Europe in November, VW will offer three economical engines. The base unit is the 110 PS 1.0-liter eTSI petrol with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance, joined by two twin dosing turbodiesel engines: a 115 PS 2.0-liter TDI and a 150 PS 2.0-liter TDI. Later on, three other petrol engines will follow: a 1.0-liter TSI with 90 PS, a 1.5-liter TSI with 130 PS, and a 150 PS 1.5-liter TSI. The range of mild hybrids will be expanded with two 1.5-liter eTSI powertrains with 130 PS and 150 PS. Finally, a 200 PS 2.0-liter TDI diesel will launch as the standard powertrain for the new Golf Alltrack, in combination with a 7-speed DSG transmission and 4Motion AWD.

 

VW will offer four trim levels in Europe for the Golf Variant: base, Life, Style, and R-Line. The Golf Alltrack will launch as an independent model with standard 4Motion permanent AWD, increased ground clearance, and an all-terrain look including specific bumpers and a custom interior. VW will also offer a Golf R Variant performance model further down the line.

Standard safety equipment for all Golf Variant models has been enhanced and now includes Lane Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking Front Assist with City Emergency Braking System and Pedestrian Monitoring, oncoming vehicle braking when turning function, Driver Alert System, XDS electronic differential lock, and the Car2X local warning system.
