With the facelifted G70 sedan already unveiled, Genesis can now turn its attention to the sporty-looking station wagon variant, which was recently spied doing the usual rounds at the Nurburgring. The more practical version of the premium compact car will have the wagon body-styles of the Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3-Series in its sights, though unlike its German competition, the roofline will be more arched behind the B pillars.
There’s been talk about Genesis using the
‘Shooting Brake’ moniker, however this has not been officially confirmed yet.
Strictly speaking, the term should be applied to two-door models that are a
cross between an estate and a coupe, not four-door wagons with sloping rooflines,
but carmaker marketing divisions have their own agendas and interpretations –
just look at Mercedes-Benz.
What else should we expect from it,
besides the elongated roof ending with a spoiler and a tailgate covered up by a
hump in these spy shots? The third-quarter windows, alongside new taillights,
double exhaust pipes on the passenger side like on the pictured prototype and a
front end similar, if not identical, to its four-door sibling, with the
split-headlamp design and the same ‘Superman-shield’ grille. The interior will
echo the sedan as well, and will likely feature the 8-inch digital gauges,
10.25-inch infotainment system with smartphone integration and voice control,
wireless charging pad for compatible devices and a new selection of upholstery
and trim.
It should be the same story with the
engine lineup, with the estate offering a 249 HP 2.0-liter turbo-four and a 365
HP twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6. In South Korea, the 2.2-liter turbodiesel will be
part of the offering, producing 199 HP. Genesis will lift the cover off the
five-door G70 in the first half of next year, before launching it as a 2022
model. It’s still unknown if the wagon model will be offered in the USA and
Canada, though we sure hope it does.
