Hyundai’s upcoming all-new B-segment SUV for Europe will be called the Bayon, set to debut in the first half of 2021. Once on sale, it will join the carmaker’s European line-up of crossovers, which also includes the Kona, Tucson, Nexo and Santa Fe. The Bayon will be the entry-level model, and we already know a little bit about its styling thanks to our spy photographers getting acquainted with a prototype back in August.

So where does the name Bayon come from? Well, it was inspired by the city of Bayonne in southwest France. The reasoning was that since the Bayon is primarily a European product, it should be named after a European city. The small French town sits between the Atlantic coast and the Pyrenees mountains and is “a great location for those who enjoy activities such as sailing and hiking,” which is said to fit with the lifestyle character of the new model.

This is of course not the first time Hyundai has taken inspiration from locations around the world in order to generate new nameplates. You’ve got the Tucson and Santa Fe, but also the Kona, whose name is derived from the Kona district of the Big Island of Hawaii. Hyundai will reveal more details about the Bayon in the near future.
