Hyundai has dropped a teaser of the upcoming Ioniq 5, the first of its electric vehicles to be based on the recently unveiled Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). Unfortunately, the teaser video fails to showcase any details about the EV. Even so, according to the car manufacturer, the clip “takes inspiration from the all-new Ioniq 5’s yet-to-be-revealed design details, showing pixels and dots converging in a white space representative of a new era of EV.”
It is understood that the Ioniq 5 will be
based on the Hyundai 45 EV Concept (pictured below) that was unveiled at last
year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Even though we don’t have an image of the production
model, the square pixels shown throughout this clip may hint that it will have
pixelated headlights similar to the ones of the concept.
We already know that the Ioniq 5 will be
unveiled in early 2021 and will take the shape of a compact crossover, although
key details, such as its powertrain and performance, remain under wraps. Hyundai
has also confirmed that the Ioniq 5 has vehicle-to-load (V2L) bi-directional
charging capability, fast-charging capability, and will sport an “array of
features”.
The Electric-Global Modular Platform
(E-GMP) that will underpin the EV is a rear-wheel drive platform, meaning that
rear- and all-wheel drive variants of the Ioniq 5 might be offered. If that’s
the case, all-wheel drive ones will include an EV transmission disconnector
that can control the connection between the rear motor and the front wheels and
switch between rear- and all-wheel drive modes to enhance efficiency. Moreover,
the platform supports a range of up to 500 km.
