Toyota will bring the heat on models such as the Hyundai i10 and Kia Picanto with a new generation of the Aygo. The Japanese city car with European DNA was recently spied testing, showcasing its revised overall proportions.
The 2022 Aygo has
a raised hood and a more imposing front end, with new headlamps flanking the
grille. The back end will look like an evolution of the current iteration, with
the vertical LED taillights on each side of the new tailgate and a
similarly-styled bumper.
The cabin has yet to open up to the
camera, but we can expect an extensive makeover, with a new dashboard panel and
a more modern infotainment system, perhaps joined by a small TFT display
between the traditional gauges. The overall build quality should be improved,
alongside the interior storage spaces, boot capacity and rear legroom.
Instead of going down the all-electric
route, Toyota’s new A-segment car might use a self-charging hybrid powertrain
like the latest Yaris. This is understood to join the regular petrol variant
that would keep it on the affordable side of the market.
Designed and engineered in Belgium, the
new-gen Aygo is probably due towards the end of 2021 or in the first half of
2022, and will be made in the Czech Republic. While the Aygo will live on for
at least another generation, its siblings from the PSA Group, the Peugeot 108
and Citroen C1, won’t be replaced, because the French auto giant sees this
segment as being unprofitable.
