The first spy shots of the upcoming 2022 GMC Hummer EV have arrived, giving us our first real-world look at the reborn electric truck. The battery-electric Hummer was spotted being transported on a flatbed, driven on public roads, and being tested alongside a camouflaged 2022 Chevrolet Silverado facelift, giving us a better perspective of the vehicle’s size and presence among regular traffic.
And unsurprisingly the new Hummer looks
like a proper beast on all occasions. The test car on the flatbed makes the
Chevrolet 4500/6500 HD carrying it look narrow by comparison while we suspect
that the Chevy’s rear suspension was also tested pretty extremely during the
Hummer’s transportation.
The test cars also featured steel tube
running boards to protect the huge rocker panels, redesigned door mirrors that
look sleeker compared to the original show car, while it appears that the
design of the rear control arms is also different. The interior of the test
cars remains under covers but our spy photographers were able to grab a few
partial shots of the dashboard, which appears to be consistent with the show
car’s cabin, which featured a 13.4-inch infotainment display, in addition to a
12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
GMC will initially offer the Hummer EV in
the limited ‘Edition 1’ model. This will feature the three-motor electric
drivetrain fed by a 24-module Ultium battery pack, offering a combined output
of 1,000 HP. The carmaker estimates that the Hummer EV Edition 1 will offer
over 350 miles of driving range.
The new Hummer EV will be compatible with
the industry’s fastest 350kW DC chargers, with the Ultium battery pack to
feature the unique ability to switch from its native 400 volts to 800 volts and
allowing adding 100 miles of range in 10 minutes of charging. Production of the
2022 GMC Hummer EV is expected to begin this fall with a closed-rear SUV
variant to follow, so stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.
