When Hyperion unveiled the XP-1 prototype last summer, we noted it looked like an extraterrestrial Bugatti. That belief is being backed up today as the model looks absolutely alien on the streets of Los Angeles. Decked out in two-tone camouflage, the prototype easily stands out in a sea of white sedans. It also makes a red Ferrari California T seem boring by comparison.
Hyperion didn’t say much about the XP-1’s
field trip, but the prototype looks identical to the car that was introduced
last year. As a result, it likely features titanium reinforced composite
bodywork and a wrap-around glass canopy. We can also see “vortex forced” air
intakes and active aerodynamic side blades which help to improve cornering at
high speeds.
The styling isn’t the only thing that
helps the XP-1 stand out as it’s a hydrogen-powered supercar that features a
proton exchange membrane fuel cell, carbon fiber hydrogen storage tanks and
ultra-capacitor energy storage technology. The company has been coy on
specifics, but the car is slated to have multiple electric motors, all-wheel
drive and a three-speed transmission.
In terms of performance, the model will
accelerate 0-96 km/h in less than 2.2 seconds and have a top speed
in excess of 356 km/h. While hydrogen refueling stations are few and
far between, that shouldn’t be much of an issue as the XP-1 is slated to have a
range of 1,635 km. The XP-1 will go into production next year and
only 300 units will be built.
