Flashy colors best suit super sports cars, would be this editor’s opinion. Then again, the 2022 Mercedes G-Class 4×4² isn’t your typical G-Wagen, as it boasts visual and mechanical upgrades meant to enhance its off-road credentials and make it a head-turner. Spied undergoing testing in Sweden, this prototype had its extremely big wheel arches, portions of the roof rack and rear wheel holder hidden under the psychedelic camouflage, whereas the front grille was partially covered up by black tape. And as our spies noted, it might be the US-spec, considering the positioning of the side turn signals, cleverly masked within the trim.
Believed to have been developed by the AMG
brand, the new G-Class 4×4² will be a totally different animal than the regular
G-Class on which it’s based. Like its predecessor, the new model will arrive
with portal axles for improved off-roading, something that the German car firm
has become a fan of in recent years, longer suspension travel for way more
ground clearance, underbody protection, upgraded brakes, and chunky rubber
hugging the new wheels. A roof-mounted light bar is also expected to be part of
the package, turning night into day at the push of a button.
Exclusive upholstery and trim should adorn
the cockpit of the vehicle, which might be dubbed the G63 4×4² in global
markets, or the G550 4×4² over here and the G500 4×4² overseas. No matter the
name, the new G Squared should pack a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, though it
remains to be seen whether we’re looking at the standard offering or the 577 HP
powering the latest G63. As for its predecessor, it used a 4.0-liter V8 engine
with 416 HP.
The 2022 G-Class Squared could debut prior
to the end of the year.
