Following this weekend’s debut, GMC has released new pictures and details about the 2024 Hummer EV SUV. Jumping right into the numbers, the SUV measures 4,999 mm long and has a wheelbase that spans 3,218 mm. This means the Hummer is slightly longer than the Acadia, but has a generous wheelbase that slots in between the Yukon and Yukon XL.

It’s also worth noting the SUV is smaller than the pickup as its 508 mm shorter and has 226 mm less between the wheels. GMC was quick to point out this makes the SUV more maneuverable than the truck and added its 10.8 meter turning circle is tighter than the Ford Mustang Mach-E, thanks to its available 4 Wheel Steer system.

Sticking with the specs, the model promises to be an off-road beast as it has short overhangs and a maximum ground clearance of 406 mm. Furthermore, the SUV has approach, departure and breakover angles of 49.6°, 49.0° and 34.4°, respectively. The model also has 330 mm of suspension travel and a max water fording depth of 813 mm. The SUV will also be offered with CrabWalk and Extract Mode. The former allows the Hummer to drive diagonally, while the latter raises the vehicle approximately 152 mm to cope with extreme terrain.

Sticking with the off-roading theme, the myGMC app will feature a new off-road trail mapping function aimed at Hummer owners. Besides helping drivers navigate off the beaten path, the trail maps place a heavy emphasis on range and nearby charging stations as there’s nothing worse than running out of juice in the middle of nowhere. Routes and plans can be downloaded from the app onto a driver’s phone, and then projected onto the 13.4-inch infotainment system.

Furthermore, the SUV will be offered with an available Power Station function. It effectively turns the Hummer into a giant battery, which can supply up to 3 kW of power to equipment such as lights and TVs to make your next camping trip a bit more enjoyable. The Power Station can also be used to charge other electric vehicles, such as Hummers that run out of juice on a trail.

One-pedal driving is popular with EVs owners and GMC is utilizing it for off-road applications as drivers can simply use the accelerator to travel slowly through rough terrain. The model also has a Terrain Mode, which “uniquely integrates the brake system with one-pedal driving, giving the driver precise control while off-roading and rock crawling.” The truck and SUV were designed alongside one another and share a number of styling similarities. However, the rear is unique to the SUV and has a power swing-out tailgate with a rear-mounted spare tire. The tailgate “opens like a vault” and provides an expansive 1219 mm opening to make loading and unloading cargo a breeze.

Speaking of cargo, buyers will find up to 2316 liters of luggage space when the rear seats are folded down. The model also has additional storage space hidden beneath the load floor as well as extra room in the frunk. Getting back to the design, the Edition 1 will be offered with an exclusive Moonshot Green color, which is GMC’s first matte paint job. Seven other colors will be available, including a number of eye-catching hues such as blue and orange. Most versions of the SUV will have a double-stacked, 20-module Ultium battery that provides more than 483 km of range. GMC didn’t go into many specifics, but noted higher-end variants feature 800V technology and a DC fast charging capability of up to 300 kW. This will allow owners to get approximately 161 km of range in as little as 10 minutes.

Like the pickup, the SUV is based on GM’s Ultium platform and will be launched in an exclusive Edition 1 trim. It will go into production in early 2023 and start at US$ 105,595. For an additional US$ 5,000 customers can add an Extreme Off-Road package, which features 18-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch off-road tires. The package also includes rock sliders, underbody production, a front eLocker and virtual rear lockers. Other highlights include heavy-duty ball-spline half shafts and an UltraVision system that provides an assortment of off-road camera views.

The Edition 1 has a tri-motor powertrain that develops up to 830 hp and 15,592 Nm of torque. It will enable the SUV to accelerate from 0-96 km/h in approximately 3.5 seconds. There’s no word on why the SUV isn’t getting a 1,000 hp variant like the truck, but the model will have a range in excess of 483 km. However, the Extreme Off-Road package cuts that distance to 451 km.

A few months later, in the spring of 2023, Hummer will launch 2X and 3X variants. The 3X has the same powertrain as the Edition 1, but loses some of its special features and has a lower base price of US$ 99,995. The 2X will start at US$ 89,995 and have a dual motor powertrain that produces up to 625 hp and 10,033 Nm of torque. GMC didn’t say how fast this version will be, but the model will have a range in excess of 483 km just like its more powerful siblings. The 2X and 3X will also be offered with the aforementioned Extreme Off-Road package.

In the spring of 2024, GMC will launch an entry-level 2 variant for US$ 79,995. While it has two electric motors that produce a combined output of 625 hp and  10,033 Nm of torque, the model features 400V charging technology and a smaller battery pack that allows for 402+ km)of range. However, customers will be able to upgrade to 800V technology and a larger battery pack that provides 483+ km of range.
