General Motors has confirmed plans to build an electric Chevrolet Silverado. The company didn’t go into many details, but said the pickup has been “designed from the ground up to be an EV.” As a result, it will ride on the company’s Ultium platform and offer more than 644 km of range.
Little else is known about the model at
this point, but the company said the truck will build on the “Silverado’s
proven capability.” GM also confirmed there will be retail and fleet versions,
and the latter could pose trouble for the Lordstown Endurance.
The Silverado EV will be built at Factory
Zero in Michigan, alongside the Cruise Origin as well as the Hummer EV SUT and
SUV. The latter models will be available with a variety of powertrains ranging
from dual motor setups with up to 625 hp to tri-motor setups
with up to 1,000 hp. However, we wouldn’t be surprised if
the Silverado EV has more modest outputs. GM didn’t give a specific launch
date, but the Silverado EV will arrive by 2025. It should be followed by an
electric version of the GMC Sierra.
In a statement, GM President Mark Reuss
said “Chevrolet will take everything Chevy’s loyal truck buyers love about
Silverado — and more — and put it into an electric pickup that will delight
retail and commercial customers alike.” As for the current truck, it isn’t
going anywhere as GM told us the announcement “does not impact our current
Silverado and commitment to ICEs in the near term.” Quite the opposite as the
company will unveil the facelifted Silverado “very soon” and it will have
“significant updates in terms of design and capability.”
