XPeng has unveiled the all-new P5, ahead of its debut at the Shanghai Auto Show. Set to become the brand’s third production vehicle, the P5 is an electric fastback that follows in the footsteps of the P7. While it’s not as good looking as its larger sibling, the model features an evolutionary front fascia with X-shaped lighting units. The P5 also has a rounded front bumper, a wide lower opening and charging ports on both front fenders.
Moving further back, we can see plastic
body cladding, a gently sloping roof and a prominent shoulder line. The model
also sports a panoramic glass roof and metallic trim that continues all the way
to the rear window. Speaking of the rear, the P5 has slender taillights that
are connected by a thin illuminated strip. We can also see a short trunk and a
black rear bumper.
In terms of size, the P5 measures 4808 mm long and has a wheelbase that spans 2768 mm. This
means the car is 114 mm longer than the Tesla Model 3, but has a
4.2 inch shorter wheelbase. Moving into the cabin, we can see a digital
instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch infotainment system with a portrait
orientation. Elsewhere, there are stylish leather seats, gloss black trim and
metallic accents.
XPeng didn’t go into many specifics, but
confirmed the car will offer a built-in fridge and a fragrance dispenser. The
model also features digital key technology as well as a “sleep mode,” which
enables the front seats to fully recline.
Putting the looks aside, the P5 is the
“world’s first production smart EV equipped with automotive-grade LiDAR
technology.” Two double-prism LiDAR sensors are located where the air intakes
would normally reside, and they’re capable of distinguishing “pedestrians,
cyclists and scooters, static obstacles, and road works, in challenging
scenarios such as night and low-light conditions, backlighting, and alternating
light and dark illumination in tunnels.” The P5 also comes equipped with 12
ultrasonic sensors, 5 millimeter-wave radars and 13 high-resolution cameras.
That might sound like overkill, but XPeng said they provide redundancy and
enable the car to handle “challenging and complex road conditions.”
The sensors are the backbone of the new
XPILOT 3.5 semi-autonomous driving system, which is being billed as the
“strongest” offered in production vehicles. XPeng didn’t go into details, but
said their Navigation Guided Pilot function will now be able to work on city
streets and not just highways. Full details will be announced on April 19th, but
the P5 is expected to be offered with a variety of powertrains as well as rear-
and all-wheel drive. It should also undercut the P7, which begins at ¥ 229,900
(US$ 35,130).
