Xpeng raised eyebrows with the stylish P7 and it’s about to be followed by the all-new P5. Set to debut tomorrow in Guangzhou, the P5 will become the company’s third production vehicle and the “world’s first mass-produced smart EV equipped with automotive-grade LiDAR technology.” Xpeng was coy on specifics, but the teaser video suggests the car will have LiDAR sensors where the air intakes would normally reside. The company also hinted the model will have their next-generation XPILOT 3.5 autonomous driving system as well as an infotainment system with new features.
That isn’t much to go on, but the teaser
images reveal the model will follow in the footsteps of the P7 and feature a
curvaceous front end with a slender LED light bar that spans nearly the entire
width of the vehicle. We can also see a wide intake and silver beltline trim
that wraps around the car. Out back, there’s a familiar rear end with a black
bumper and slim taillights that are connected by an illuminated strip. The
model also appears to have a trunk with an integrated rear spoiler.
While the company is keeping details under
wraps, the P5 moniker suggests the model will slot beneath the P7. The latter
starts at ¥ 229,900 (US$ 35,130) and features 60.2, 70.8 and 80.9 kWh battery packs
that allow for NEDC ranges of between 480–706 km. The P7 also
offers rear- and all-wheel drive powertrains with outputs of up to 424 hp. Following its debut tomorrow, the P5 will be showcased at the
Shanghai Auto Show on April 19th. At that event, we can expect to learn “full
details of its configurations, performance and pricing.”
